Eating Disorders

Eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, over-exercising, and overeating stem from deep cultural, familial, institutional, relational, or traumatic issues. Eating disorders are adaptive in nature and provide a way to avoid or numb as a survival mechanism. Our relationship with food and exercise is directly correlated with relationships with others and ourselves.

Therefore, the key to understanding eating disorders is to first find the source of distress within our relationships and to explore past experiences that have disturbed our relationship with ourselves. Ask anyone who has struggled with an eating disorder, and they will tell you that these problems can be incredibly challenging. They can leave even the most dedicated individuals and families feeling overwhelmed and hopeless about the future.

Even with the best intentions and strenuous efforts, many people find that they alone cannot overcome the problems that keep them from the life they desire. However, the truth is that you are not alone.

I believe we exist in community with each other and that people working together can move through things that are beyond what one person could do alone. I have spent my entire career helping families, especially women, through the complicated maze of eating disorders. Whether it is Anorexia, overeating, Bulimia, or over-exercising, I have walked the path of recovery myself. I know how overwhelming these problems can be, but I am here telling you that I know that change is possible.

Each person and situation is different. The road to recovery needs to be personalized so individuals can develop ways to shift their unhealthy relationship with themselves, their bodies, or loved ones into a healthy one.

Eating disorders are not just about food and weight. We will work to explore your specific concerns whether it lies with self-worth, self-confidence, trauma, family issues, obsessional thinking, perfectionism, or relationships to figure out how to move forward in a way that aligns with your own values and goals. With more than 20 years of experience, I believe in providing individuals with as much support as necessary and sometimes that involves a professional treatment team including a dietitian, psychiatrist, and physician. I have trained professionals at my ready.

I’ve had the incredible privilege to watch client’s access connection and strength to overcome great odds to heal and achieve their goals.

With a strong therapeutic relationship, people can get better.
